Over the past twenty three years, while sitting in the water waiting for waves, I've seen an array of aquatic life. Significant time observing the ocean and its creatures has given me some unique experiences.
An Orca swam within two meters of me one time in Santa Cruz.
Many seals have popped their heads up right next to me and then tilted their heads while looking me in the eye. I've seen that same behavior in dogs.
I've seen large crabs at me feet while wading in the shallows, and I've seen gigantic sea jellies floating all around me. I took comfort that jellies can't sting through a wetsuit.
I've seen a great white shark jump clear out of the water 100m out from me. It was a juvenile, but still disconcerting nonetheless.
One night while surfing long after sunset and after the offshore boats had turned their lights on, a dolphin charged me. In the dark, with a large dorsal fin barely visible and the dark mass getting larger and larger, my heart pounded and I thought how ridiculous it was that I was afraid of a dolphin. If you have never seen a dolphin close up though, you could understand. They are much larger close up than they look from the bleachers at Sea World.
I've seen marine mammals washed ashore missing their heads. What would have caused this? Sharks?
